What style will work best for me?
Naturally this depends on the use. If the user has been using a conventional mouse or track ball then the J2 mini desktop could work be best as it sits flat. If it is envisaged that the joystick might need to be mounted from something, then the more compact J3 is often preferred. If a future mount might be from an arm, then consider the Camera mount option available on the J3C variant which does add 5mm to the height compared to a standard J3 model. The J1 is for very challenging positioning designed to be mounted from a Celtic Magic hand support base. Please ask if you feel this might be best.
Do I need a Light Force version?
If the user has been using a regular game controller but now struggling to readily move the sticks that is a good clue. The light force version of our mini Jn sticks is approx. 30% of the force required by a standard games controller and offers a sensible next step before considering extremely light force devices. Celtic Magic can also offer extremely sensitive joysticks like our Feather (adjustable between 5-20 grams is the worlds lightest) however this may well be a step to far if the user has ‘just’ started to struggle with a standard game controller.
It is better that a light force joystick is in balance with a user's current ability and an extremely light force stick can be just too light and in practice be harder to use. The Feather joystick at its highest force setting is similar to a light force Jn joystick however the angle of movement is much less ( 6 degrees vs 20 degrees).
Sip & Puff (breath control)
Is an option for the UMax model, used for mouse buttons and scrolling
USB or Analogue Output?
A USB versions is required for advance configurations and is for use as a mouse controller or as a gaming joystick. The firmware can be changed by the user switching the device between mouse or gaming stick using the Celtic Magic Updating PC App.
The firmware can be easily changed by the user and the function of the joystick then changes from say being a mouse controller to a gaming joystick or even a AWSD keyboard output.

For gaming the standard analogue connection is a 3.5mm TRRS plug into a MS Xbox Adaptive Controller (XAC) or the Sony Access Controller (SAC) and others.
The USB version can also be used for gaming but not with the Sony SAC as it does not support USB, however the MS XAC can accept up to two USB joysticks.
The USB versions can also be configured using the free Celtic Magic Configuration PC app. See below. This allows you to change the sensitivities in different directions, polarities and much more. The UMax version (mouse controller) also supports external switches and has a display output. This drives an optional external led bar display (part CM/ED1) and is used for single switch mouse operation or switch free use.
